JON WICKLUND Obituary

Jon Alan Wicklund passed away peacefully on August 4, 2022, his 83rd birthday in his adopted hometown of Brooklyn New York. He was a beloved brother, uncle and friend and is survived by his sister Ruth Beam, brother Bob (Lynne) and a host of nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces and cousins. Jon was born and raised in the Twin Cities, graduating from Robbinsdale Senior High School in 1957 and the University of Minnesota in 1962 with a B.A. in Humanities. While at the University of Minnesota he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.  Upon graduation Jon enrolled in the Peace Corps, serving in Afghanistan, first as a volunteer and then as an administrator.  That experience ignited what would become life-long passions, teaching and travel. At times he was able to combine them, twice serving on the faculty of schools in Saudi Arabia sandwiched around a decade-long tenure as headmaster of a private school in Tokyo, Japan. When he returned to the United States, he was a faculty member at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a senior College of the City University of New York.  While teaching at John Jay, Jon settled in the Brooklyn Heights area of Brooklyn. His love for his new home was never more evident than when he would provide a walking tour of his neighborhood to friends and family highlighting the history, architecture and even gossip surrounding important sites most particularly the Brooklyn Bridge.  After Jon retired, he shared his love of NYC by giving guided tours to visitors of New York City.

His leisure travel took him around the world visiting places big and small on six continents.  It was his one regret that he could never maneuver a trip to Antarctica. His travels resulted in a cherished network of friends with whom he actively kept in contact.

To all of his friends and his family he will be remembered as a man with a love of art and literature and a man of intelligence and compassion. He will be missed.  Memorials preferred to SAGE NY.
